Recently, we collaborated with Elite Scaffold Hire to help them build a temporary public access stair for an opera production on the beach.
The BOHÈME ON THE BEACH opera production was set place on a warm, autumnal night in the beautiful coastal city of Glenelg, South Australia. The show featured Puccini’s La bohème on the beach, with audiences taking their seats or picnic blankets down to the beachfront.
However, moving patrons from the entrance to the sandy beach proved to be a challenge, with the most efficient way being over a small barrier wall onto the sand below. Therefore, an access solution was needed for the public to transition safely and efficiently.
Another supplier was scheduled to erect the public stair however they could not complete the works resulting in the event organisers approaching Elite Scaffold Hire to provide for a solution within a week.

Temporary Public Access Stairs in Glenelg, South Australia
Working together, Elite Scaffolding provided the site concept and challenge to SafeSmart Access engineers, who delivered a fully engineered scaffold design, all within a week. The final scaffold design was fully compliant to standards and local South Australian regulations, complete with full detail, drawings, and precise instructions for the crew to assemble.
With approval by the event organisers, the SafeSmart team was able to dispatch the components in time for install prior to opening night. The comprehensive design and certification enabled the Elite Scaffolding crew to install the structure easily, allowing the third-party scaffold inspection to be quickly approved with no delay.
The 5-step stair entrance provided enough clearance over the wall, supported by diagonal bracing, to the top landing. Pedestrians could easily walk down the remaining stair bay directly onto the sandy beach from the landing.
Elite Scaffolding was able to stabilise the structure directly on the sand without any other foundations thanks to the Proscaf bracing components and temporary footings designed in-house by SafeSmart.
The crew at Elite Scaffold Hire was able to complete the installation in time for the start of the opera production, providing a safe and secure means for members of the public to access the event area on the beach.
